Description

Paleo Profile: Spinosaurus aegyptiacus. This dinosaur's first documented fossil remains were found in 1912 and were unfortunately destroyed in a bombing raid in World War II. Fortunately what photographs and sketches that weren't destroyed aided in the Spinosaurus's scientific resurrection when several other fossil remains were found through the early 2000's. Recent studies show that Spinosaurus likely lived a very similar lifestyle to crocodilians spending much of its time in water hunting for aquatic prey. More astonishingly this is one of the first dinosaurs to be aquatic in nature and one of the first known theropod dinosaurs to walk on all four legs. This African species likely sported the large sail as a means of species recognition or as a display to attract a mate. There is still much to find regarding this unique animal's ecology and Spinosaurus enthusiasts will continue to unearth its remains to piece its story together.
Artist note: I illustrated this dinosaur in a bipedal stance as if it were lunging upward. This made this dinosaur more intimidating and brought out the classic theropod view.
I had to draw this dino for all who have been asking me to create my rendition of this Egyptian Beast. Enjoy!
